Powel Crosley Theatre productions are unique presentations of works of some of the greatest authors in literary history, including Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, Shakespeare and now Oscar Wilde. Our literary performances present audiences of all ages with the opportunity to experience the richness of language, character, comedy and drama created by the most famous and eloquent writers in the history of the English language.
The productions are performed at Seagate, the beautiful revival-style mansion built by Powel Crosley, Jr. in 1929 as the winter home for his wife, Gwendolyn. The mansion sits on a 16 acre parcel of land on Sarasota Bay, adjacent to the John Ringling Estate. The 11,000 square foot home has 21 rooms, 10 baths and a carriage house. The grounds are breathtaking, from the Royal palms that line the drive to the shimmering bayfront, which plays a vital role in each of our productions. Placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1982, we make use of this magnificent mansion--inside and out--to provide you with a sumptuous location to enjoy the fine performances of the Powel Crosley Theatre.
