Please join the Peace River Audubon Society on Tuesday morning, November 2, at 8:00 a.m., for a Walkabout to be held at Audubon-Pennington Nature Park. This Park is located on Alton Road in Port Charlotte, 1/3 mile south of Peachland Boulevard and 1 mile north of Midway Boulevard (approximately 1.5 miles west of King’s Highway).
The 8 acre Park is accessed by a 3/4 mile loop trail and takes hikers through a variety of habitats including a hardwood hammock, pine flatwoods, stand of cypress, and a bog-like area with loblolly bay, red bay, sweetbay magnolia, swamp dogwood, water oak, popash, dahoon holly, and many other wetland shrubs and plants fed by the Elkam Waterway. Other interesting plants found here seasonally include Jack-in-the-Pulpit, ground orchids, red maples, and elms. Hikers will also pass by invasive air potato vines, small Brazilian pepper trees (the larger specimens having been removed by volunteers), and the native wild grape which is spreading throughout the Park. More than 80 species of birds, 4 species of mammals, and 9 species of reptiles and frogs have been observed in the Park.
We will meet in the parking lot at 8:00. Please dress for the field and bring water. If you have any questions, please contact Larry Behrens at 941- 625-5762. The public is welcome. For our complete schedule please visit www.PeaceRiverAudubon.org. Hope
to see you there
